This critically important workshop will introduce the ICD-10 codes that will become mandatory for billing this fall. Participants will prepare for this major change through case vignettes, opportunities to practice the new code set, and preview of the ICD-11.

This program offers a context and overview of the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases (ICD); an introduction to the ICD-10-CM set of diagnostic codes that will be required for billing and health information in the U.S. on 10/1/2015; case vignettes relevant to diagnostic distinctions; participant opportunity to practice using the new code set; and a preview of ICD-11 which is already well advanced in its development. Major changes in DSM-5 are introduced. The relationship of the ICD classification to the DSM classification is discussed and contrasts between the two systems are presented.

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the purpose of diagnostic classification systems
  • Identify the two HIPAA approved code sets for the United States: understand the coding format of the ICD-10-CM
  • Transpose the three most commonly used diagnostic codes in their practices now to the new ICD-10-CM codes
  • Describe 3 major changes in the DSM-5; describe the relevance of the new codes for their health care practices
  • Identify the most important feature for clinicians in the ICD version that follows the ICDF-10-CM and ICD-11.
