    The Management of Anxiety, Insomnia, Depression and Pain with Electrons: A Brief Primer on Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES) and Microcurrent Electrical Therapy (MET)

    Alpha-Stim® is the world’s leading cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) device. It is in rapidly growing use by the mental health and pain management fields. This session will introduce CES as a primary anxiolytic, antidepressive and insomnia treatment, as well as a treatment for centrally mediated aspects of pain through treatment of the brain.  Peripheral pain treatment with microcurrent electrical therapy (MET) will also be discussed with an emphasis on practical protocols- the art of pain management. Demonstrations of 2 - 5 minute pain management protocols will be conducted on volunteers.

    Learning Objectives:

    1.     The participant will gain an overview of CES and MET theories including research and treatment protocols.

    2.     To be able to begin using and prescribing CES and MET immediately following this lecture.

    3.     To be able to manage patients on CES and MET long term, including adverse effects.

    Presenter Biography: Jeff Marksberry, MD, FAIS, CCRP

    Dr. Marksberry specializes in research management- ensuring that all current and planned Alpha-Stim research meets and exceeds the rigorous standards of EPI, Institutional Review Boards (IRB), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He focuses on designing and delivering live practitioner training programs as well as conducting webinars worldwide. His teachings emphasize training military physicians for the benefit of our Service Members. Dr. Marksberry frequently leads grand rounds in hospitals, medical centers and U.S. military bases to educate physicians and other practitioners on the use of and advances in electromedicine and Alpha-Stim technology. He has presented grand rounds at Camp Pendleton, Fort Hood, Fort Polk, NB Point Loma, Fort Bragg, Naval Special Warfare Command, Camp Dam Neck and Camp LeJeune as well as many VAMC’s and civilian medical centers. In 2011 he conducted grand rounds at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) in Bethesda providing physician training to one of the world’s most elite wounded warrior treatment facility.

    Learning Objectives:

    After completing this program, participants will:

    1. Have been taught a model for ethical decision making that can be applied to a wide range of clinical practice.
    1. Be able to distinguish between risk management and ethical practice.
    1. Have learned how anxiety interferes with clinical and ethical decision-making.
    1. Have learned the difference between privacy, privilege and confidentiality.
    1. Understand the difference between the legal and the ethical aspects of confidentiality.
    1. Have reviewed the key elements of the telepsychology guidelines of the American Psychological Association and other professional associations.
    1. Have considered various clinical aspects of the use of telepsychology, including issues of distraction and emotional disconnection. Indications and contraindications for telepsychology will be reviewed.
    1. Have reviewed the key components Clinicians in the Courtroom, including the interface between practice and the legal system.
    1. Have reviewed the different kinds of testimony of a clinician in the courtroom, including treating expert, forensic expert and percipient witness.

    Presenter Biography:

    Michael Donner is a psychoanalyst and clinical and forensic psychologist in Oakland, California. He is the President of the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis where he was until recently Faculty Co-Chair and a member of the Ethics and Impairment Committee. He is the moderator of the SFCP East Bay Clinical Forum.

    Dr. Donner is also the Past-Chair of the California Psychological Association (CPA) Division of Clinical and Professional Practice and Section on Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. He served for six years and is the immediate past Chair of the CPA Ethics Committee and Ethics and served for 10 years as the Chair of the Professional Affairs Committee of the Alameda County Psychological Association.
