Psychopharmacology Update for Clinicians: What’s new in 2018

Overview: 

This 6 hour continuing education program will provide a clinically pertinent update on psychopharmacological agents in common use.  Evidence supporting their use, data regarding efficacy on unimodal and combined interventions, and drug specific interventions for common mental disorders will be presented.  Changes in the legal and regulatory environment affecting psychologist’s involvement with psychotropic agents will be covered.  The evolving role of psychopharmaceutical agents in the management of mental disorders will be covered.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will understand changes in the healthcare delivery system that affect psychologists and psychotropic medications.
  2. Participants will understand novel theoretical approaches to the use of psychopharmacological agents that may affect their clinical utilization.
  3. Participants will gain an appreciation of the research supporting combined use of pharmacological and psychosocial interventions for common mental disorders.
  4. Participants will understand clinical theories of mechanism of action of common classes of psychotropic drugs.
  5. Participants will gain detailed knowledge of specific classes of psychotropic drugs, to include antidepressants, antipsychotics, anxiolytics, psychostimulants, mood stabilizers and cognitive enhancers.
  6. Participants will understand clinical issues surrounding the use of the above classes of medication, to include doses, side effects, and interactions with other prescribed and unprescribed substances. 

Biography: Morgan T. Sammons, PhD, ABPP

Morgan Sammons, PhD, ABPPMorgan T. Sammons is Executive Officer of the National Register of Health Service Psychologists. He is a retired US Navy Captain, and one of the first prescribing psychologists in the country.  Dr. Sammons is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, past- president of APA’s Division 55, past Chair of the California Psychological Association’s Division 5 (Psychopharmacology) and a past president of the Maryland Psychological Association.  He is a diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology
