Utah Psychological Association
The Children’s Center Psychology Internship Training Program
Type of Site: Internship, Private Outpatient Clinic, APA Accredited (On contingency)
Program Description:
The Children's Center provides mental health services for families with infants, toddlers, and preschool aged children who are experiencing behavioral and emotional problems. Interns gain exposure to a breadth of psychiatric disorders ranging from ADHD, to Anxiety and Depression. The children have typically experienced high levels of trauma in their young lives. We also work with families whose children are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. The Center provides a range of treatment including a therapeutic preschool program, parent-child psychotherapy, and trauma work with young children. The treatment modality is relationship based and the application of attachment theory to clinical practice is emphasized. In addition, The Children's Center is the recipient of a SAMHSA grant enabling us to be partners with the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN). As a result interns will have the opportunity to be trained in the use of TF-CBT and Child Parent Psychotherapy (CPP)with a preschool population. These evidenced based practices are essential tools for anyone working with families with very young children. Interns receive intensive supervision and effectively learn how to conduct comprehensive psychological evaluations on infants, toddlers and preschool aged children. By the conclusion of the internship, students will have learned to diagnose and treat most of the DSM disorders impacting young children. The internship placement is ideal for students planning a career that focuses on early intervention and treatment with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.
